Scarborough Community Safety Week 2016

Making our communities safer, stronger and more vibrant for all residents

From October 16th to 22nd, 2015 the Toronto East Quadrant Local Immigration Partnership (TEQ LIP), in collaboration with local and regional partners, organized its 4th annual Scarborough Community Safety Week. The event aimed to create more opportunities for service providers, newcomers and the community in Scarborough to work together in addressing safety issues and improving neighbourhood safety measures for Scarborough’s diverse immigrant resident groups.

This year safety week featured the following;

  1. Community Policing, criminal and immigration/ refugee law hedl on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm at Maryward LINC & ESL Centre 44 Kelvinway Drive, Scarborough, ON M1W 1N6

This workshop was organized by the City of Toronto’s Community Crisis Response Program (CCRP) in partnership with the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN). They facilitated two justice education workshops that are designed to build the legal capability of LINC students and Newcomers ages 18 and up, on community policing, criminal and immigration/refugee law. Participants met with community police officers from 41, 43 and 33 Divisions and legal counsel to build their knowledge and awareness of their rights and responsibilities when interacting with police officers, and explore how immigration status is affected upon arrest and conviction of a criminal offence.

  1. Interactive Road Safety Event held on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 10:00am to 3:00 pm at Woodside Square Mall, 1571, Sandhurst Circle, Scarboorugh, ON M1V 1V2.

Toronto Police Services 42 Division in partnership with Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Ford Driving Skills for Life, iNAVIGAIT, Woodside Square Mall and other stakeholders have organized an interactive event on Road Safety. Participants got a chance to learn about how to be safe as driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian. This event will feature the followings;

  • Senior Pedestrian Safety Launch – Toronto Police in partnership with iNAVIGAIT, a Sunnybrook Hospital Seniors Pedestrian Safety program, did a mini launch of Seniors Pedestrian Safety Awareness promotion at the Road Safety event.
  • Distracted/Impaired Driving Obstacle Course sponsored and facilitated by Ford Canada Driving Skills for Life where over 70 participants experienced the distracted driving
  • There were four workshops on Distracted Driving, Drinking and Driving and Senior Pedestrian Safety 
  • Information and display tables on Seat belt, Child car sear demonstration and bicycle safety also provided by Toronto Public Health, Paramedic, Ministry of Transportation and CAA.
  • Displays by Emergency response vehicles, O.P.P distracted driving enforcement vehicle, Accident awareness crash car added value to the outdoor exhibits.

there were workshops and information sessions on financial, youth, family and community safety took place in locations across Scarborough during this week.

Youth-focused workshops will held in the community and in schools in Scarborough. Other sessions will be focused on financial, community, family and road safety.

Target Groups:

The Scarborough Community Safety Week aimed to reach Scarborough’s newcomer/immigrant residents, newcomer civic leaders, the community at large as well as settlement and community service providers.  

Expected Outcomes:

The followings are expected outcomes of the Scarborough Community Safety Week.

  • Service providers are more aware of different types of safety issues newcomers face and have the ability to guide newcomer clients.
  • Newcomers are more aware of safety issues and are able to access service providers that can assist them with their safety concerns.
  • Stronger relationships among service providers and newcomers are developed, building on effective models of collaboration and community engagement.

Major Themes of the Safety Week:

  1. Road Safety – Includes pedestrian safety including schoolchildren, seniors and youth, cyclists and commuting issues, vehicle safety, etc.
  2. Community Safety – Includes violence, fear of violence, crimes, safety of children, seniors and women in the neighbourhood/ public space, community relationships and neighbourhood matters
  3. Family Safety – Includes domestic issues and family safety, resistance techniques, gas and electrical and fire safety, safety of children at home, senior abuse/ safety, distracted theft, sexual health and safety, emergency preparedness, etc.
  4. Financial  Safety – includes financial safety for newcomers, senior financial safety, common scams and fraud that target newcomers, consumer safety, documentation and legal awareness 
  5. Youth Safety – Includes dealing with youth related issues i.e. bullying, cyber vigilance, drug activities, gangs, gun violence and homelessness
